SZU Introduction

Shenzhen University (SZU) was founded in 1983 accredited by the Chinese Ministry of Education. In tandem with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, it has undergone rapid growth and expansion over the past three decades, and it has become a comprehensive university featuring a wide range of disciplines, excellent facilities, an outstanding faculty and strong management. As reflected in its motto “self-reliance, self-discipline and self-improvement”, SZU is committed to providing dynamic education at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels, boosting scientific research and making a great impact by engaging in social services.

SZU has two campuses, the Houhai campus and the Xili campus, and occupies a total area of 2.72 square kilometres. It has an abundance of educational resources and research facilities, including 1 National Engineering Laboratory, 2 National-Regional Key Technology Engineering Laboratories, 1 National Engineering Research Centre, 2 Ministry of Education Key Laboratories and 6 Provincial Key Laboratories.

SZU is striving to create a unique system that integrates arts with sciences, excels at applications, targets frontier issues and serves the whole society. It has 27 colleges, which offer 90 undergraduate programmes, including theoretical economics, optical engineering, information and communication engineering, and medicine. SZU is ranked among the global top 1% in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) subject rankings for 4 disciplines-engineering, clinical medicine , material sciences and Biology & Biochemistry. Three of its disciplines are graded as first class in China, with optical engineering, information and communication engineering, and computer science and technology ranking 10th , 11th and 13th  in China, respectively. The University Open Online Courses (UOOC) initiated by SZU has attracted 110 university members, having provided 154 online courses to over 200,000 users from 72 universities to date.

In the 2017 Universities Ranking of China by the Chinese University Alumni Association (CUAA), SZU is ranked 76th  nationwide, up by 29 places from two years ago. The US News & World Report 2017 for universities ranks SZU 977th in the world and 84th  in China. SZU’s 2017 ranking in the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) is 699th  in the world (up by 281 places from two years ago) and 79th in China (up by 22 places within two years), making SZU one of the fastest rising universities in the world.

Fully aware of the importance of having a strong faculty, SZU has established a vigorous and innovative faculty that are strong in both research and teaching. In addition to around 2,127 full-time teachers, SZU has 18 academicians, one Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine, 3 chief scientists of the National 973 Program, 22 distinguished  professors of the Changjiang Scholars Program, 61 researchers selected for the 1000 Talents Plan (including 34 selected for the 1000 Young Talents Plan), 29 winners of the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and 13 winners of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

Driven by a university-wide reform of research, SZU’s research projects and funds have increased significantly. Its research budget totalled 778 million RMB in 2016, with science and technology related funds hitting a record high of 723 million RMB, and arts and humanities related funds coming in at 55 million RMB.

Backed by the strong local economy of the city of Shenzhen, as well as those of Hong Kong, Macao and the Pearl River Delta, SZU is dedicated to cultivating high-level students who have an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset and who will lead future social and economic development.
